UCL and Ulster University hit by online virus

Computer systems at University College London and Ulster University have been affected by a “major” ransomware virus, just a month after a similar incident crippled parts of the NHS.

UCL reported that it was experiencing a “widespread ransomware attack via email” at 5pm on 14 June. Two hours later it described the attack as “major”, and said that it had temporarily blocked access to some of the university’s drives to protect its data.

On 15 June, UCL corrected its previous statement, saying that the attack had not been caused by an infected email but from users accessing a compromised website.
