Student applications downturn sparks call for policy change

The University and College Union is among a number of organisations calling for a change of course in higher education policy following this year’s fall in UK and EU applications for university courses.

The number of UK students who applied to study a full-time undergraduate course in the UK fell by 4 per cent, around 250,000 fewer than the previous year, UCAS, the admissions service, announced on 12 July.

At the same time, applications by EU students hoping to study in the UK dropped 5 per cent. The UCAS figures are based on submissions before 30 June.
