UK universities lobby to stay in Horizon 2020

Representatives from the Russell Group of larger research-intensive universities are visiting Brussels to lobby for the UK’s continued participation in the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research programme, which they say is critical for science in both the UK and EU.

The delegation was expected to meet the Russell Group’s European counterparts—the League of European Research Universities and the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities—as well as Members of European Parliament and EU officials on 5 September, to discuss the UK’s future relationship with Horizon 2020.

“It is vitally important that we maintain the benefits of Horizon 2020, which makes large-scale multi-lateral research possible, until the end of the programme. This would undoubtedly be the best outcome for both the UK and the EU,” said Michael Arthur, president and provost at University College London, who is leading the delegation.
