Sink or swim for Scottish research pools

A review of Scotland’s research pooling initiative that has channelled hundreds of millions of pounds to universities has placed the future of the scheme up in the air.

The Scottish Funding Council, which supports 11 pools bringing together university research in areas ranging from physics to Gaelic, announced a review of the scheme on 9 November. Since 2004 more than £140 million from the SFC and more than £300m from Scottish universities have been channelled through the pools.

Pete Downes, vice-chancellor of the University of Dundee, said it was “quite likely” that some of the 11 pools would stop receiving funding from the SFC as not all of them will be able to show value for money.
