UK researcher receives life sentence in UAE

Matthew Hedges, a PhD student at Durham University, has been jailed for life in the United Arab Emirates after being found guilty of spying.

Hedges, who specialises in the politics of the Middle East, was detained in Dubai in May while on a research visit. He was arrested at the airport as he tried to leave the country.

After spending several months in solitary confinement, Hedges, who has always denied the charges, was released on bail and told to remain in the UAE until today’s court hearing, which ruled that he had been spying on behalf of the UK government.
