Scottish funding body warns of Brexodus

The Scottish Funding Council has warned that there is “anecdotal evidence” that researchers employed by Scottish universities who are European Union nationals are considering leaving their posts due to Brexit.

In a briefing document about the potential impact of Brexit on Scottish universities, the SFC said that leaving the EU in March 2019 could lead to a decrease in the number of EU academics and postgraduate research students, hampering Scotland’s ability to produce high-quality research.

“This report echoes what I am continuously hearing from colleges, universities, students and researchers—that the biggest threat to Scotland’s reputation for world-leading innovation right now is Brexit,” said Richard Lochhead, Scotland’s minister for further education, higher education and science, in a statement.
