Higher education institutions in the UK have continued to increase their staff numbers despite concerns about the impact of Brexit on their finances.

Data released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency on 28 February show that the total number of academics employed by UK higher education institutions grew by 21.2 per cent in the 10 years to 2017-18, increasing from nearly 175,000 to almost 212,000.

Universities have expanded their academic workforce despite the uncertainty caused by Brexit, with levels rising by 2.47 per cent in the two academic years after the UK voted in June 2016 to leave the European Union.
