The number of higher education institutions reporting a financial deficit has seen a significant rise in the past three years, new data show.
Total income in the sector increased by more than £2.4 billion last year, but expenditure rose by £2.6bn, according to data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency released on 21 March. Forty-one UK institutions posted a pre-tax deficit in 2017-18, compared with 32 in 2016-17 and 19 in 2015-16.
