Union insists Surrey staff cuts ‘unjustified’

The University and College Union has condemned the thinking behind proposed staff cuts at the University of Surrey and wants assurances that union members’ jobs are not at immediate risk.

In a letter on 7 March to vice-chancellor Max Lu, UCU’s regional official Michael Moran said that the reasons given by Lu for future cuts were “far too vague to convince staff they are necessary”.

Lu had warned in a message to staff last week that the university needed to make up a shortfall of at least £15 million a year for the next few years. He said that Brexit, a potential cut in tuition fee income and a fall in the national league tables contributed to the university’s financial situation.
