Scottish funder confirms 10 universities will be hit by cuts

Final funding allocations for Scottish universities show that 10 institutions will face cuts to their teaching, research and innovation grants in the 2019-20 academic year.

The Scottish Funding Council’s final figures, released on 17 May, indicate that almost half of the 19 higher education institutions in Scotland will have to tighten their purse strings in the coming year, with cash cuts of up to 1.2 per cent.

These figures mostly confirm the indicative allocations released by the SFC in February, the funder said. At the time, the vice-chancellors’ group Universities Scotland warned of the impact of the proposed allocations, saying that for 10 universities they equalled real-term cuts of at least 2 per cent.
