The University and College Union has called on the government to provide “concrete assurances” on the rights of European Union citizens living and working in the UK.
The government recently announced that it hoped to end freedom of movement immediately in the case of a no-deal Brexit on 31 October. This contradicts the Home Office’s fact sheet, which says EU citizens residing in the UK will not be affected by such a move, the UCU said in an open letter to prime minister Boris Johnson on 29 August.
“These contradictory statements have caused significant confusion and have done little to assuage the obvious concerns and objections that have been raised about the impact of no-deal on EU citizens’ rights,” wrote UCU general secretary Jo Grady.
