Are England’s universities bastions of free speech or hotbeds of no-platforming intolerance?
In 2019, as the UK headed into a general election, the Conservative party made a promise. It said that if the electorate delivered it a majority, it would deal with what many in the party feel is a problem with universities: freedom of speech, or the lack of it.
“We will…strengthen academic freedom and free speech in universities and continue to focus on raising standards,” the party’s manifesto declared.
