Institutions claim China’s Confucius Institutes are beneficial to students and research

University representatives in Scotland are seeking urgent meetings with the Scottish and Westminster governments after the UK’s trade minister restated a prime ministerial commitment to closing down Confucius Institutes.

Speaking in the House of Commons on 1 November, the UK security minister, Tom Tugendhat, confirmed that prime minister Rishi Sunak will follow through on his leadership campaign pledge to shut down Confucius Institutes operating out of UK universities.
