The University of Bristol’s vice-chancellor discusses its controversial past, challenging present and vital future

Evelyn Welch started her job as the University of Bristol’s first female vice-chancellor on the same day Liz Truss started as prime minister.

When most of us would still be asking where the coffee machine is in the office, Welch found herself alongside Truss at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, whose death ended a 70-year reign.
