Automation brings only ‘minor advantages’ to peer review and could be gamed, says report

Artificial intelligence should not be used in the next Research Excellence Framework, according to experts testing whether automation could ease the burden of the mammoth assessment exercise.

The REF is a time-consuming process for over 1,000 experts who peer-review journal papers and other research outputs submitted by universities, raising the question of whether AI could play a role in reducing their workload.
