Specialists excel alongside smaller universities as major institutions are largely absent
University of the Arts London tops the table in the Research Professional News ranking for art and design—history, practice and theory, following the results of the 2021 Research Excellence Framework.
Submissions to the REF are broken down across 34 topic areas, or ‘units of assessment’. While the overall league table sees large universities with expertise across a swathe of topic areas dominate the rankings, smaller institutions can carry more weight when it comes to individual units of assessment.
