The seven-year research assessment itch has been scratched. Now what?
On the morning of 12 May, the woman heading up the Research Excellence Framework was ready to celebrate the fact that results had finally been published. Smiling as she spoke, Kim Hackett, director of the REF at Research England, hailed the “big moment” at the end of seven years’ work for universities, researchers and those who make the exercise happen.
After 157 institutions sent in 1,878 submissions—involving 76,132 academic staff and 185,594 research outputs—it was almost all done and dusted. The quality of the UK’s universities had again been assessed.
