UK holds onto fourth spot in ranking of natural sciences

The UK has retained fourth place in the latest global ranking of high-quality natural sciences, compiled by the academic publisher Nature, but its share of research outputs dropped by nearly 6 per cent between 2020 and 2021.

The fall in UK share of outputs, which mirrors many other traditional research-intensive countries, is down to the continued rise of Chinese science, with the Asian nation increasing its share of natural sciences publications by over 14 per cent year on year.
