Share of care-experienced students at university stagnates

UK government data show increasing progression to higher education overall, amid access discrepancies

The proportion of care-experienced students entering university in the UK has stagnated, according to official government figures.

Statistics on widening participation in higher education published on 28 July show that in 2020-21, just 13 per cent of school pupils who had been cared for by a local authority for 12 months or more as of 31 March 2017 progressed to higher education by age 19. This compares with 45 per cent of all other pupils.
