University sorry for causing ‘further upset’ over student death

Applicant reportedly complained online about University of Manchester’s refund policy shortly before he died

The University of Manchester has apologised for causing “further upset” after it issued a statement about a postgraduate applicant who reportedly died by suicide.

On 27 July, the university published an initial statement saying it was aware of “upsetting reports online about a student applicant”, and that it was “looking into what has been said as a matter of urgency”. The applicant has been named in several media reports as Rory Wood.
