Poorest students ‘worse off’ as inflation hits maintenance loans

Institute for Fiscal Studies observes decline in value of student support

The failure of maintenance loans for students in England to keep pace with inflation means that some students are more than £100 a month worse off than they would have been in 2021-22, a report has found.

Students from households with a low income are eligible to claim support. However, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies, higher than expected inflation has continued to erode the real value of maintenance loans.
