UCU boss says Home Office proposals will hit universities hard

UCU general secretary Jo Grady has said the government should abandon plans to raise the earnings threshold for skilled worker visas in the UK, describing them as a “massive own goal”.

On 4 December, home secretary James Cleverly said the government is set to increase the threshold from £26,200 to £38,700 and reform the shortage occupation list, which contains a number of roles in higher education, in order to curb immigration.
