Record university deficits ‘scuppering pay increases’

Employers association analysis shows vast majority of universities made annual loss in 2021-22

UK universities suffered record deficits on their balance books in 2021-22, an analysis of official data has shown.

According to the Universities and Colleges Employers Association, there were “significant increases” in the proportion of higher education institutions with deficits when compared with 2020-21, with 100 out of 144 providers in the red for the year.
