USS is heavily invested in under pressure Thames Water

University pension fund contributed to £500 million payment to beleaguered water company in March

The Universities Superannuation Scheme has confirmed that it contributed to a £500 million payment to Thames Water in March by shareholders supporting the troubled firm.

The USS pension fund—which has itself been rocked by financial turmoil in recent years—expanded its stake in Thames Water in 2021, bringing its holdings in the country’s largest water and wastewater company to almost 20 per cent. At the time, it said this was the “largest single investment” that the pension scheme held.
