Newcastle vice-chancellor becomes Russell Group chair

Chris Day identifies sector challenges as he takes up role at group of research-intensive universities

Newcastle University vice-chancellor Chris Day has identified challenges for the sector, as he takes up his role as chair of the Russell Group, which represents 24 leading UK research universities.

Day, who has been vice-chancellor and president of Newcastle University since 2017, said students faced huge difficulties because of the cost of living crisis.
