RPN Live: Difficult to complete PhD without parental support or social capital, says former pro-vice-chancellor
The UK’s PhD system is “broken”, with significant financial support from parents or social capital now needed to complete one, a speaker told delegates at yesterday’s RPN Live Summit.
People from less advantaged backgrounds are effectively locked out of doing PhDs due to the low amount of money being paid to post-graduate researchers, said Simon Green, former pro-vice-chancellor for research at Aston University.
