Russell Group universities in deficit despite DfE reassurances

Hesa data show wide range of institutions posting annual deficit in recent accounts

Four Russell Group universities have posted deficits in their most recent annual accounts, suggesting that no universities are immune to the financial challenges facing the sector.

When asked about Russell Group institutions’ financial security in the House of Lords on 21 May, Department for Education junior minister Diana Barran said that “larger institutions like the Russell Group universities are in very good financial health and continue to show significant surpluses”.
