High commissioner says students “underpin the larger India-UK economic relationship”

India’s most senior diplomat in London has warned the UK government that international students “underpin the larger India-UK economic relationship”, as ministers consider reforming the graduate route visa.

The government is expected to announce new immigration measures affecting international students on 23 May, when the latest migration statistics are released. This follows a report by the Migration Advisory Committee, published on 14 May, advising the government to keep the graduate route after finding little evidence that it was being abused.
