Another year brings another vital vote for researchers, says Daniel Cressey in this week’s Research Fortnight leader.
As the first Research Fortnight of 2019 went to press, parliament was preparing to vote on the prime minister’s Brexit deal with the European Union on 15 January. The majority of informed observers think she will lose. But only the most hardened gamblers would put money on what comes next.
Most of the available options—a general election, a second referendum, a no-deal Brexit, an attempt to negotiate again with the EU 27—involve continued uncertainty. In that sense the research community, with its strong and mutually beneficial links to the continent, can only lose.
