Martin Turner asks whether Boris Johnson’s government can back up its warm words on science.

In Boris Johnson’s opening speech as prime minister, he praised the UK’s “extraordinary bioscience sector” and highlighted the life sciences and academia as strengths of the UK economy. Days later, at the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester, he promised to double down on investment in R&D.

Even last week’s controversial announcement that parliament will be prorogued to bring forward an “ambitious” new legislative agenda included investment in science as one of five “crucial public priorities”.
