New ministers could bring more rigorous inspection of higher education, says Jonathan Simons

The government reshuffle has surprised many with the depth of changes around higher education and science. Now the dust has partly settled, here are six takeaways for what it means.

First, there’s been a lot of commentary about splitting the higher education portfolio. Science now sits in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), under a different, more junior minister from the universities minister in the Department for Education (DfE).
