Brexit’s return to the news agenda should focus minds

Despite the slight easing of lockdown, it is perhaps inevitable that deja vu is settling in for some. And it is entirely forgiveable if the unwelcome return of ‘Brexit deadlock’ to the news prompts an eye-roll and swift move on to something more novel, something that shows real change is possible in the UK—maybe the fact that Covid-19 shut down filming at the BBC, which stopped broadcasting new episodes of Eastenders for the first time in decades.

But the looming 1 July deadline for Boris Johnson to request an extension to the Brexit transition period—which he has said he will not do—merits examination, even at risk of repetition.
