More than a number

The ground is shifting under the research world again

For years, many in UK research have been obsessed with the number 2.4: the percentage of GDP the Conservatives pledged would be spent on R&D by 2027.

The promise has underpinned significant increases that are scheduled to take the public R&D budget to £20 billion a year by 2024-25, according to the last spending review, and upwards from there.
