Vaughan Gething has emphasised collaboration—but money is tight, say Rick Delbridge and Kevin Morgan

On 16 March, it was announced that Vaughan Gething had narrowly won the vote to become the next leader of Welsh Labour, meaning he has replaced Mark Drakeford as the first minister of Wales. In a close-run contest with education minister Jeremy Miles, Gething’s garnering of trade union support within the complex voting arrangements of Welsh Labour gave him victory with 51.7 per cent of the overall vote.

Gething’s winning manifesto emphasised “Welsh Labour values of equality and fairness”, and the power of “ideas and policy innovations” rooted in these values to deliver a healthy nation, green prosperity and a stronger Wales. He set out plans to build more social housing, improve public transport and achieve excellence in schools and colleges to provide opportunity at all life stages.
