Moment of truth for science funding deferred
The deal to avoid the fiscal cliff that was agreed by Congress and the White House on 1 January provides science funding with a reprieve until 1 March, by when fresh spending cuts are supposed to be agreed. The fiscal cliff comprises a combination of tax increases and spending cuts that would have been triggered if no deal had been reached, but has now been postponed.
