Obama backs automatic green cards for US-trained PhDs who find work

A much-anticipated proposal for US immigration reform includes a plan to attach a green card, which gives the holder permanent resident status, to the diplomas of non-US citizens who earn advanced degrees in scientific and technical disciplines at US universities.

The plan, announced by the Obama administration on 29 January, would also require employers to pay a fee to help support the education of US citizens in STEM careers.
