$22.5m to train science and maths teachers

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) will invest $22.5 million over five years to help research universities train a new generation of science and mathematics teachers, the not-for-profit medical research organisation announced on 18 March at a White House briefing.

The grants will enable the National Math and Science Initiative, which was formed to address the declining number of US students who are prepared to take rigorous college math and science courses and are equipped for careers in those fields, to expand its UTeach Program to 10 leading US research universities.
