Lawmaker questions dangerous research safeguards

A decision to reconvene the federal National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB) to re-examine new versions of studies that genetically modified H5N1, a super virulent form of the bird flu virus, has prompted an investigation by the vice chair of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee.

Republican Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner from Wisconsin sent a letter to White House science advisor John Holdren on 1 March, seeking information about the Obama administration’s safeguards for potentially dangerous scientific research.
