Research groups feel loss with Harkin’s departure

One of the Senate’s most ardent biomedical research advocates, who was instrumental in getting the National Institutes of Health’s budget doubled from 1998 to 2003, announced his retirement on 26 January.

Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin from Iowa said he will not seek re-election after the expiry of his Senate term in 2014.
