Lawmakers are continuing to push back against the cuts to science proposed by president Donald Trump.
If the bills approved in the House and Senate become law, they would slightly reduce the budgets for NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Energy. However, this would be a big improvement compared with the deep cuts that the White House has proposed.
Both chambers must still pass legislation and come together to negotiate compromises before the fiscal year ends on 30 September, to avoid government shutdown.
