Federal shutdown harming research, politicians told

Politicians’ failure to agree a federal budget for 2019 is damaging research and other activities by forcing them to shut down, research organisations have warned.

The United States government has been in partial shutdown since 22 December because of the budget deadlock, with nine of 15 federal departments and various federal agencies affected. These agencies include NASA, the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The National Institutes of Health and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention are not affected, because they are funded through separate legislation. Nonetheless, academic representatives have been highly critical of the political impasse.
