Bipartisan bill aims to broaden base for US technical education

Bill would direct National Science Foundation to create schemes to help more colleges win funding

Republican and Democrat senators Roger Wicker and Maria Cantwell have reintroduced a bill to boost technical education in the United States, including by setting up a scheme to help more colleges win federal science funding.

The Advanced Technological Manufacturing Act was reintroduced on 11 March. It instructs the head of the National Science Foundation, the United States’ main basic research funder, “to establish a series of pilot programmes to expand the number of institutions of higher education that can successfully compete for NSF grants”, the senators said in a statement.
