NSF plan to change grant merit review criticised

A proposal to change the merit review criteria used by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to assess grants has been criticised by university representatives at a hearing of the House Science, Space and Technology’s research and science education subcommittee.

At issue is a revision of both the “Intellectual Merit” and the “Broader Impacts” requirements to clarify their intent and the ways that they would be used in the NSF merit review process.
