Over 100 research animals booked into Chimp Haven

The National Institutes of Health will retire more than 100 of its chimpanzees used in research at the New Iberia Research Center in Louisiana to a sanctuary known as Chimp Haven over the next 12 to 15 months, the agency announced on 18 December.

In September, NIH said only 10 of the chimpanzees were scheduled to go to the Louisiana sanctuary, while more than 100 would be retired from experimentation but remain at New Iberia, a lab notorious for Animal Welfare Act violations.
