NIH steers researchers away from ‘random source’ cats

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is transitioning its grantees away from the use of research cats obtained from individual owners, small hobby breeders, pounds and animal shelters—collectively known as Class B dealers that are licensed by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The agency announced on 8 February that it is implementing a plan to limit the expenditure of funds used to acquire cats for NIH-supported research to legal sources other than USDA Class B dealers.
