R&D funding growth trails behind economic growth

Although research and development spending in the US resumed growth in 2010 and 2011, it still lags behind the overall growth in the national economy, according to analysis released by the National Science Foundation on 10 January.

In 2010 overall R&D performed in the US totalled $406.7 billion in current dollars, compared with $403.8bn in 2009, according to NSF. The preliminary estimate for the nation’s total R&D in 2011 is $414bn.
