About 20 per cent of businesses pursuing R&D applied for patents

Approximately 20 per cent of American businesses that conduct or fund research and development activities applied for US patents in 2008, the year for which the most recent data are available, according to National Science Foundation analysis.

The results of NSF’s 2008 Business R&D and Innovation Survey, released on 15 February, reveal that US companies applied for more than 130,000 patents from the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2008. In that year, the office issued more than 65,000 patents to companies pursuing R&D.
