DOE team approved by Senate

The Senate has confirmed three Department of Energy appointees who are part of secretary Ernest Moniz’s efforts to make the agency more effective after a critical 2013 report.

Franklin "Lynn" Orr will be the department’s first undersecretary for science and energy. Orr is a chemical engineering professor at Stanford University, where he was the founding director of the Precourt Institute for Energy, which funds energy research across the university’s disciplines. Orr’s own research focuses on sub-surface fluid flow and how it relates to both extracting natural resources and possibly sequestering carbon dioxide.

As undersecretary, Orr will be in charge of all the agency’s science and energy research, including 13 national laboratories not involved in nuclear research.
