The United States Department of Energy has pledged $75 million to keep the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis (JCAP) open until 2020.
The government funding for the center is, however, still subject to Congressional approval.
Researchers at the center are looking for ways to make fuels such as hydrogen using solar-powered chemical reactions. In one version of the technology, catalysts powered by the sun’s energy split water into oxygen and hydrogen gases. Hydrogen fuel cells can produce clean electricity, and are hailed as one possible route to cleaner energy use in the future.
