The National Institute of Standards and Technology has awarded almost $40 million to 33 research projects aimed at improving broadband communications technologies for the emergency services.
The aim is to modernize public safety communications by supporting the migration of data, video and voice communications from mobile radio to a nationwide broadband network, as well as developing technologies for indoor location tracking and public safety analytics.
The grants are funded by NIST’s $300m share of the 2015 auction of advanced wireless services licenses.
